IFA, Berlin – September 2nd, 2022 – Targus, the global backpack and tech accessories brand, returns to IFA this year with the market’s first Zero-Waste Backpack where the packaging is fully incorporated into the bag itself. The company is also unveiling a new state of the art virtual AR customer shopping experience, which is set to make shopping instore more sustainable.
Saving the planet, one backpack at a time
Targus’ latest addition to the successful EcoSmart collection is the Zero-Waste (packaging) Backpack - the first backpack to use its own packaging to build the frame of the bag itself. This is done by simply unravelling the backpack and re-inserting the packaging to create the frame of the EcoSmart bag. This way, the bag seemingly ‘eats’ its container, creating a structure without its packaging going to waste. Designed in a small compact box, the packaging is designed to be easily stackable, whilst also optimising shipping and in-store space.
Like the rest of the EcoSmart range, the laptop backpack is made from recycled post-consumer plastic, that would have otherwise ended up in landfill or polluting our oceans. Using the equivalent of 24 plastic bottles per bag, Targus is well on its way to achieving its mission to become the number one manufacturer to recycle the most plastic. It aims to achieve all this without compromising on the brand’s impeccable quality or functionality. This zero-waste packaging product is Targus’ newest answer to the growing consumer demand for more sustainable solutions that can be integrated into everyday lives and comes with a lifetime limited warranty.
Reimagining the shopping experience
As retailers seek new ways to attract customers to bricks and mortar stores and enhance the shopping experience, Targus is also unveiling its new in-store augmented reality solution to demonstrate a new way of shopping to retailers and consumers. The AR experience combines a virtual store with mixed reality, so shoppers can explore the collections and products on offer in an easy, personalised way in its new mixed reality retail store of the future.
The highlight of the AR experience is a digital backpack scanner, where customers can virtually try on the full range of Targus bags. By slipping one bag on their back the virtual full body mirror lets customers scroll through the Targus collections via a giant touchscreen to select their perfect backpack and choose their favourite colour.
For retailers, it means they can drastically reduce the number of SKU’s kept on site, freeing up storage and shelf space for bulky items such as backpacks. This digitalised way of shopping also avoids as much as two tonnes of CO₂ emissions and shows retailers how they can diversify their displays whilst being more sustainably minded and deliver a new experience.
Dave Crew, Commercial Director EMEA at Targus, says, “We believe the tech accessory and computing peripherals industry is ripe for a sustainable revolution. It’s Targus’ mission to establish new supply chains, new manufacturing processes and selling channels to create a truly functioning circular economy. With our zero-waste backpack and digital shopping experience, we are one step closer to achieving that. We are here to say it is possible.”
