Targus sees docking station adoption reach record heights in 2019

Changing work preferences and mixed estate IT practices boost adoption of universal docking stations across range of industry sectors

London, UK – July 2019Targus, a leader in universal docking solutions, has emerged as the number one third-party vendor for universal docking stations in Q1 of 2019. It attributes this to the growing popularity of flexible working and mixed estate IT practices.

Universal docking stations allow users to extend their laptop into a workstation no matter where they are. Users can easily connect a laptop to a monitor, wireless keyboard, mouse or conference room displays through one, single dock.

Docking station use is on the rise globally; the first 3 months of 2019 alone saw 847,000 units sold, a 26% year-on-year growth. This is a trend mirrored in the UK with a 12 per cent growth in docking station sales across the same quarter.

While docking solutions from Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) remain a large part of this market, independent brands are increasingly growing their market share due to their universality. It effectively allows companies to future-proof their on-desk tech by not tying the user to a specific laptop. It also removes the need for IT managers to spend budget buying the ‘matching’ dock each time they upgrade a user’s device.

“OEMs are clearly missing a trick here by not providing solutions that are versatile enough to adapt to changing IT trends.” said Marcus Harvey, Sales Director EMEA at Targus.

“Companies need a truly universal product without any additional purchases, extra costs, or expensive adaptors to provide optimal connectivity for all employees. Solution providers that fail to offer adaptable solutions risk getting left behind,” he added.

More than just hardware

The unique software features of Targus docking stations extend far beyond hardware compatibility – a key differentiator that sets the brand apart from its competitors.

Targus docks are able to automatically clone the laptop MAC address onto the docking station though MAC Address Cloning Utility. This allows the network to identify and authenticate the laptop behind the Dock-Network connection, enabling network access control and tighter security access control for IT departments.

Targus is the only company to offer this transparency to businesses.

Targus’ docking stations can also offer enhanced network speed and security. The docks can automatically disable and enable Wi-Fi as devices are docked and un-docked, allowing improved network connection speed and reducing unnecessary Wi-Fi traffic.

These significant features mean IT departments and employees alike are able to achieve the best possible working experience.

Changing workplace trends

The increase in universal docking station adoption has been building momentum in an ever-evolving work environment, where hardware compatibility and flexible working solutions are at the forefront of business IT priorities.

The working environment has become increasingly dynamic to the benefit of employers and employees alike. Remote working options boost talent attraction and staff retention, while matching employee expectations for flexi-working. On the flip side, employers are able to reduce lease costs and improve collaboration across departments through flexi-working practices such as hot desking.

The rise of remote working calls for increased mobility in working environments. Employees expect to be provided the necessary technology solutions to empower them to work anywhere without having to compromise on their working conditions. Docking stations are a key accessory to fulfil this need.

Evolving IT practices

The need for streamlining solutions is further challenged by the rise of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Choose Your Own Device (CYOD). Gone are the days where IT departments had full control over the devices used within the company. This mixed environment has created a challenge of compatibility, an additional burden for IT departments, as well as increased expenses related to purchasing numerous docking stations.

Managing mixed estate is further complicated with constantly advancing technology. Recent times have seen a shift towards USB-C from USB-A, now the dominant plug-in for the UK at 51% in 2019. Adoption of this new standard is required to remain competitive, yet an entire shift may not be feasible or cost-effective as USB-A will continue to hold a significant place in the market for some time.

To streamline efforts and adopt a solution that would allow all the shared workspaces to be compatible with a variety of OEM devices – both new and legacy – capable of handling future refreshes is thus not only necessary, but also economical.

A versatile solution

Universal docking stations exist as a one-size-fits-all solution, enabling companies to change hardware in the future easily, rather than face an expensive and time-consuming overhaul, switching between providers. These docking solutions also allow for easy and early adoption of the latest innovations so businesses can remain competitive as new tech trends surface.

“Future-proofing your IT infrastructure becomes even more critical with evolving business trends,” Marcus added.

“As business needs change every day, technology must remain dynamic to ensure organisations are not left behind. IT departments need to find the optimal solution that not only caters to legacy products but is also able to adapt to new technology in a cost-effective manner. Our universal docking solutions can help businesses achieve this at a marginal price.”
