More than half of Brits admit they struggle to fit exercise around their working lives

FELTHAM, UK – Thursday 1st February, 2018 – Today, Targus – a global leader in mobile accessories – announced new research revealing more than half of people (55 per cent) across the UK find it hard to fit exercise around their working lives.

The survey - conducted by OnePoll and carried out in seven countries across Europe - uncovered the key factors that are restricting people from living more active lifestyles, with a lack of time, poor work / life balance and stress cited as the main reason by consumers.

The majority (32 per cent) of Brits said they exercise two to three times a week, however, somewhat worryingly, 10 per cent of people across the UK claim to never exercise – the highest percentage when compared across every other region. 37 per cent of Brits blamed a lack of the time as to why they don’t exercise more frequently.

Continental fitness trends

Across the continent, around one in four (18 per cent) Europeans exercise less than once a week, with a fifth (20 per cent) of respondents putting this down to a poor work / life balance.

In comparison, respondents from The Netherlands topped the charts as the most active European country, with 45 per cent of people exercising four times a week or more. The Dutch also appeared to have a more positive work / life balance, with 70 per cent claiming they do not struggle to find time to exercise, including one in three people keeping active by cycling to work.

While slightly less fitness-focused, the Spanish came close to taking the crown for most active EU citizens, with half (50%) of those asked working out two-three times a week. In contrast, only one in four (26 per cent) Brits exercised at such a rate.

Raphael De Perlinghi, EMEA Director, at Targus, said: “As people of all ages and generations become more health-conscious, remaining active is playing an increasingly important role in our daily lifestyles. However, these recent survey findings reveal there are still many people across a number of countries that are struggling to incorporate exercise into their regular routines, whether due to a lack of time, stress, or a poor work / life balance.”

No gender gap in the gym

When it comes to the frequency of exercise, there appeared to be no such gender gap in the gym, with two thirds of men (67%) and women (64%) carrying out some form of activity at least twice a week.

There was, on the other hand, a contrast between the sexes when it came to accessorising for the gym, with men (74 per cent) more likely to exercise if they can fit their work and gym stuff into just one bag, compared to women (59 per cent). Young people, between the ages of 18-24, felt the same as men, with seven in ten agreeing, vs. just a third (37 per cent) of over 55s.

Raphael added: “We’ve seen a real rise in the number of men taking health and wellbeing seriously and these findings reflect that - with men just as likely to regularly exercise as women – as long as they can fit everything in one bag!

“In today’s 24/7 society, with flexible working yet to be fully embraced by many organisations, building fitness and well-being into your lifestyle can be a challenge. There are a number of devices and tech available that can help ease this process – from wearable devices, to fitness trackers.  Targus have even developed a range of backpacks called Work + Play to help you carry not just your tech but your gym stuff too.”

Methodology

Carried out by International research company, OnePoll, 7,000 employed adults across the UK, France, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and Finland were surveyed between 5th – 28th December 2017, on their exercise habits. Respondents were both male (3,218) and female (3,782), and between the ages of 18 – 55+.
